This is 'Not a Wheelchair' - Introducing The Rig

7.1M views · 6 years ago · demo · evergreen

JerryRigEverything introduces The Rig, an e-bike-based mobility vehicle presented as an alternative to a wheelchair. The video shows how it works and how it moves.

HN people see it as a better direction for assistive devices than disability dongles, a rethinking built on first-hand knowledge of disability.

“It's actually taking an e-bike and turning it into a wheelchair that looks a lot more like the future and not a "dongle"”

I don't know why you are getting down-votes. If you've spent any time around a motorized wheelchair you would see they are still pretty bad tech. The wheelchair companies were not the ones who managed to produce the e-bikes and e-scooters, even though they seemed well placed to do so. It's actually taking an e-bike and turning it into a wheelchair that looks a lot more like the future and not a "dongle" (plus the creator has first-hand knowledge of disability): ▶ this video

Indeed, this thing will likely eat tires if used on-road a lot. Without a differential, it'll also be harder to steer and will want to "push" through the turns. You can see this at 2:31: ▶ this video The turning radius isn't that great, and the lack of a differential helps explain why. Definitely an interesting design choice.
