1969 Engelbart Demo - ASIS Conference (1/3)

2K views · 8 years ago · demo · historical

Part 1 of 3 of Douglas Engelbart's 1969 demonstration of his NLS system at the ASIS conference. It is a follow-up to the 1968 Mother of All Demos, showing the mouse, screen editing and linked information at a more relaxed pace.

HN treats it as the better-paced companion to the Mother of All Demos, and quotes Engelbart's own explanation of the mouse and screen pointer.

“So I can sit here and move this and point quite accurately and I never look down on my hand.”

He introduces the mouse pointer as bug: "So I can sit here and move this and point quite accurately and I never look down on my hand. I'm looking at that spot on the screen that we call a bug and this thing we call a mouse. They've been with us long enough so these names are carved in stone now." ▶ this video
