Unveiling the genius of multi-touch interface design | Jeff Han

478K views · 19 years ago · talk · historical

Jeff Han demonstrates his multi-touch sensing display at TED in 2006, with several fingers manipulating photos, maps and other objects directly on a large screen. The demo, which pre-dated the iPhone, showed pinch to zoom, dragging and other gestures as a natural way to interact.

HN people say it gave them the same sense of a new interface paradigm arriving as seeing the first GUI.

“instantly knew a UI paradigm was going to be a very big deal”

> Younger people on here may not realize what a mindbending experience it was to see a GUI for the first time. The next time I experienced that same feeling was during Jeff Han's TED talk where he gave his multitouch demo. ▶ this video

> It was electrifying. The only time I've seen a demo of new tech that gave me the same feeling of inevitability came from Jeff Han's multitouch demo. ▶ this video

Jeff Han's 2006 Ted Talk featuring a multitouch demo was the only other time I've seen a user interface demo and instantly knew a UI paradigm was going to be a very big deal. ▶ this video
