How Upside-Down Models Revolutionized Architecture

2.4M views · 2 years ago · explainer · evergreen

Stewart Hicks explains how architects used hanging, upside-down models to find the shapes of arches and domes, working out compression by letting strings hang under their own weight. The video ties this method to the design of large buildings such as the Sagrada Familia.

HN people share it as a mind-blowing look at how large buildings were designed upside down with string.

“One of the things that blew my mind is how the calculations for large buildings like this were done.”

One of the things that blew my mind is how the calculations for large buildings like this were done. They design it upside down with string! the suspension of the string will produce the correct shape for compression in the domes and arches when inverted. ▶ this video
