Starfire Director's Cut

12K views · 14 years ago · other · historical

A director's cut of Starfire, Sun Microsystems' 1994 concept film of future computing, which Bruce Tognazzini led. It imagines work and communication around large touch-sensitive desktop displays.

HN people share it as a peak-90s vision whose predictions finally came true 20 to 30 years later.

“The concept video from Sun is definitely peak 90s, but some of the things inside have finally come true 20 years later.”

I own TOI and it was interesting because Bruce was post-Apple and could tell some tales about certain things. And he was flush with Sun Microsystems cash to try some new stuff. My copy of the book came with a VHS copy of the Starfire concept video. Some interesting predictions that finally came true, 20-30 years later. ▶ this video

I was always intrigued by the Starfire project mentioned here. The concept video from Sun is definitely peak 90s, but some of the things inside have finally come true 20 years later. ▶ this video
