Magic Cap Introduction Demo 1/6/94

13K views · 8 years ago · demo · historical

A demo of Magic Cap, the pocket-computer interface from General Magic, recorded in January 1994 and posted by Andy Hertzfeld, who worked on it. It shows the room-and-objects metaphor the software used in place of a conventional desktop.

HN treats it as a key piece of history, tying General Magic's ideas to later products like Clippy and Java.

So Clippy came from Microsoft Bob. Microsoft Bob itself was a response to General Magic's "social interface", known as Magic Cap [1]. Another thing that came as a response to General Magic: Java. Java was a response to General Magic's Telescript [2]. So Clippy and Java were both inspired by the same product! Watch the video [3] for an important piece of history!
