Apple and Steve Jobs' Biggest Mistakes Ep 1 - The Macintosh

1.4M views · 11 years ago · essay · evergreen

The 8-Bit Guy argues that the original Macintosh was among Apple and Steve Jobs' biggest mistakes, comparing it with the Apple IIgs and what Apple might have done by continuing the Apple II line. The first episode of a series, it is a retrospective on 1980s Apple product decisions rather than on interface design as such.

HN people link it in debates about whether the Apple IIgs was the better machine and what a more gradual Apple II roadmap might have looked like.

The main thing I remember being crippled on the IIGS was the CPU clock speed. The 8-bit guy did a video about this a while ago: ▶ this video

I wonder what would have been if Apple kept pushing the AppleII line in a much more gradual tech road map. ▶ this video In my opinion - computers should still have a boot to basic with a simple interface to vga graphics and passable sound. Something like pico-8 but a better editor with VI bindings. :-) It's a good thing we have the raspberry pi.
