Light Table - a new IDE

34K views · 14 years ago · demo · intermediate · dated

Chris Granger's demonstration of Light Table, a new IDE that shows code results inline as you work. It is built around immediate feedback and a more direct, visual way of working with programs.

HN people list it among the tools that put Bret Victor's ideas into practice, and recall it whenever an editor shows inline REPL results.

“The inline REPL functionality reminds me a lot of the (defunct) Light Table[1].”

> I'm much more curious about a programming paradigm that no longer uses text to communicate with computers but instead just directly manipulating data I don't think there's any way to get away from this abstraction. At it's lowest level, everything is encoded in binary. All abstractions on top of binary are just interpretations of the underlying stream, text being a relatively simple encoding (ASCII table or UTF8's multi-byte structure). Structure data is similar, just multiple pieces packed into one contiguous space. You will always have to build on top of this fundamental, there is no simpler That being said, I quite like: * Datasette - link - I have a feeling ou could connect a lot of these instances and truly make something interesting there * Lightable IDE - ▶ this video * I have at least 2 more but I can't find them in my favorites I'm trying to make my own as well. Hardest thing is giving myself enough time to do it, but I'm currently starting to structure my life around it.

You might find the work Chris Granger did on Light Table quite interesting ( ▶ this video ) I really liked the first version and did some research some time ago on how to make this usable by a wider audience: link

Looks nice! The inline REPL functionality reminds me a lot of the (defunct) Light Table[1]. [1]: ▶ this video
