Universal Mind of Bill Evans (1966 Documentary)

523K views · 10 years ago · documentary · historical

A 1966 documentary on the jazz pianist Bill Evans, in which he talks about how he learned and developed his playing and how he thinks about creating music. It mixes performance with his own account of the process.

HN recommends it as a rare long conversation with a master about creativity and self-teaching, and one that matters to people outside music.

“This video is an excellent musing on creativity and learning that I think is relevant even for nonmusicians.”

The jazz/classical split is a false dichotomy. Bill Evans more or less implies that he saw himself as coming out of the classical tradition: ▶ this video This video is an excellent musing on creativity and learning that I think is relevant even for nonmusicians.
