Alan Kay: Computer Applications: A Dynamic Medium for Creative Thought 1972 (VPRI 893)

9K views · 11 years ago · talk · intermediate · historical

Alan Kay's 1972 talk on computer applications as a dynamic medium for creative thought, archived by VPRI. It comes from the early days of personal computing, when Kay was developing his ideas about computers as a medium for learning.

HN people keep finding it for its vision of computing as a creative medium, and for a favourite passage about aiming for Sistine Chapel ceilings instead of test scores.

“That gives me goosebumps every time I think about it.”

Delighted to see this finally make the front page. I submitted it just a few days ago, but it was quickly buried: link My favorite part starts at 40:50: ▶ this video Paraphrasing: “Our goal is not to measure "answers right per test", or "test passed per year", but rather Sistine Chapel Ceilings per lifetime.” That gives me goosebumps every time I think about it.
