Erik Spiekermann über iOS 7

81K views · 13 years ago · interview · dated

Typographer Erik Spiekermann talks in German about iOS 7, with English captions available. He gives a type designer's view of its design, including the thin, ultra light type.

HN people cite it as the sharpest argument against design that looks beautiful but ignores usability, especially thin fonts that strain the eyes.

Who designed this site? Readability is very poor. 8px font size for the 'pre-order' button, really? And the contrast ratio is pretty low too. Please, don't hire designers who just care about the graphic design aspect and making it look beautiful, but a pain to use, i.e. totally neglect usability. Ultra light fonts are made for headlines, not for body copy. They lead to very even gray levels, which is great if you don't want to read the text. If you want to, though, it's a real strain on the eyes. Edit: See font designer Erik Spiekermann on the topic (English captions are available): ▶ this video
