Atari 8-bit GUI: Low-level GFX Rewrite

18K views · 8 years ago · demo · intermediate · historical

A demo of a graphical user interface for the Atari 8-bit computers, with a classic Mac-style look, running after a rewrite of its low-level graphics code. It shows windows and menus on a 1.79MHz machine.

HN people share it as an impressive feat of software craft, a responsive GUI on hardware that never shipped with one.

“It's crazy how responsive the UI looks in the video (for an 8-bitter)”

Here's a video of a classic Mac OS style UI running on 1.79MHz Atari 8-bit computers. I find this to be a very very impressive feat. ▶ this video Speed-wise this appear to me to be about the same speed 8MHz 68000 Mac SE did run it's graphics.

You mean like the super xe? link Scoped in 1988 with Ricoh. Add a gui and you have an interesting machine ▶ this video However, in the light of the 16bit ascendence I can see why this was canned.
