Electric cars prove we need to rethink brake lights

5.5M views · 3 years ago · explainer · evergreen

A Technology Connections explainer on how electric cars with one-pedal driving slow down without always lighting the brake lights. It argues that brake light rules are outdated and should be rethought, and that some makers handle it better than others.

HN people cite it to explain why drivers behind an EV may not know it is slowing, and as proof that outdated regulations leave each manufacturer to improvise.

There's a great video from "Technology Connections" covering one-pedal driving here [1]. The gist of it is that one-pedal breaking doesn't have a great way to control the break lights, making it difficult for the cars behind you to recognize that you're slowing down, which can cause accidents. You are right, some EVs cut corners and don't activate the brake lights in these situations: ▶ this video

Thanks for sharing! I don’t think the first point is fair tho. If this [1] is the video, at 1:27 he talks about two specific manufacturers. The point of the video was that regulations are outdated so different manufacturers can implement stuff differently, not that “everyone does it wrong”. Around the 13 minutes mark he speaks about GM doing the right thing. [1] ▶ this video
