Kurt Vonnegut on the Shapes of Stories

2.2M views · 16 years ago · lecture · evergreen

Kurt Vonnegut lectures on the shapes of stories, drawing simple curves on a blackboard that plot the fortunes of a main character over time. He shows how familiar story types, such as man in a hole or Cinderella, follow recognizable emotional arcs.

HN people return to it as a witty, simple way to understand narrative structure, and refer to it whenever story shape comes up.

Vonnegut is really special. I always like coming back to his Shape of Stories talks: ▶ this video Here's a longer one: ▶ this video It's interesting to see the difference in him with age. He seems to giggle more as an older man.

You can find variations of this talk across his life but Vonneguts 'Shape of Stories' kept ringing in my head while going over this paper. I like the later-in-life version of the talk. ▶ this video

Yes, Hero's Journey plot (link) is very well understood and yet continues to sell well and generally the idea of certain shapes to stories is beautifully explored here among other places: ▶ this video

i read this and liked it, only after I scrolled up did I realize it was Kurt Vonnegut. Also, I really love this video of his, on the shape of a story ▶ this video As a side note I found the formatting, or lack of formatting, interesting. It felt very much like a document, or a piece of paper, than a web page. That surprised me.
