Lecture Part 1 of 9

86K views · 20 years ago · lecture · evergreen

The first of nine parts of a 1991 lecture by the architect and planner Andrés Duany on New Urbanism. He criticizes car-oriented development and makes the case for walkable, traditionally patterned towns.

HN people recommend it as a funny and informative argument about why car-centered places fail pedestrians, often alongside urban design discussions.

“It's very funny and very informative.”

Reminds me of Andres Duany's presentation to San Diego local government officials[1]. It's very funny and very informative. A highlight for me was when he was discussing an artist's impression of what amounts to an urban wasteland and points out that, yes, that lone pedestrian in the picture is "theoretically possible". Well worth a watch. [1] ▶ this video
