Unforeseen Consequences: A Half-Life Documentary

7.7M views · 7 years ago · documentary · evergreen

A /noclip documentary on the making of Half-Life and the history of Valve. It was made without participation from Valve itself, so it is pieced together from outside accounts of the game's development.

HN people call it a must-watch and list it among their favorite media on how products and games get made.

“It is soo good, a must watch.”

One of my favorite documentaries was made by Noclip, which tells the story of Half-Life and Valve. It is soo good, a must watch. Interestingly, though, it features no one from Valve, as they, in typical Valve fashion, ignored their requests. ▶ this video So I'm very excited to watch this new documentary featuring people who worked on the game, made by the same people, such a surprise haha.

I'm really fond of book and medias about the creation of a product here are some of my favorites one: - link (docu series on the creation of the xbox, by microsoft) - link (precursor of the modern smartphone, still not watched this one but look interesting) - link ( the springboard smartphone history) - ▶ this video (Half life documentary, various video game documentaries are available on the noclip channel and they go with a a good amount of depth) - link (AN incredible series on japan electronic industry, not a single product per se but lot of seminal products are introduced) - link (Iphone history) - Master of doom (classic book on ID software, the last entries of abrash black art book on Quake creation are a lot of fun too) - link great article series on the creation of the crash bandicoot and its tech challenge - The Future was here – The Commodore Amiga (book on the Amiga computer creation, with lot of technical yet manageable details) All in all ressources that include a good mix of technical details and compelling narrative would be great.

NoClip is fantastic; I also really enjoyed the Rocket League[1] and Half-Life[2] documentaries. Danny just seems like a genuinely nice guy who just loves to tell the stories behind these games, it's awesome to see the success he's had with NoClip. [1]: link [2]: ▶ this video
