Pixel Pioneers: A Brief History of Graphics, Part One

754K views · 11 years ago · documentary · evergreen

The first part of Ahoy's documentary series on the history of computer graphics, told largely through video games. It traces how game visuals developed from early hardware limits toward more advanced rendering.

HN people use it as their go-to recommendation for the history of graphics, noting that despite the name it is really about video games.

I usually recommend A Brief History of Graphics: ▶ this video (Despite the name, it focuses on video games.) Also, The Video Game Years is an excellent series on console gaming which highlights the broader atmosphere (mostly in the US) around each device, spanning the late 70s to late 80s: link (edit: Forgot to mention, skip to 1980 for less babbling and more info. It's one of those series that gets better in later episodes.) There's actually a ton of other good retro-gaming channels on YouTube that I've found to be on par with or better than the more well known gaming documentaries.
