An experimental new way to design software

209K views · 1 year ago · demo · dated

Anthropic's short demo of an experiment in which Claude generates working software and interface on the fly, instead of running pre-built apps. It shows the idea of an interface produced by the model as you use it, with no fixed code behind the screens.

HN mostly cites it as an early glimpse of a future where AI simulates whatever application you want and software writes itself.

Anthropic has experimented with this: ▶ this video

I disagree. This is like the invention of the steam machine which may be the most important factor in kickstarting the industrial revolution. I am pretty sure none of the guys who were there, had any clue as to how this was going to change the world, but I suspect at least some, knew that; this is something else. People are bitching now about how AI has ruined coding, not fully grasping that for most people, there will be no code, no applications, no operating systems. AI will pretend to be all of that, and doing it way better. A six year old will be able to "out-code" all of us. This is half a year ago: ▶ this video

This is all temporary. In a not too distant future, people will just get the AI to simulate whatever application they want directly - skipping that annoying programming stage altogether :D ▶ this video

A new wave of abstraction is reshaping software engineering. Each pushed machine code closer to humans or made software easy to build: Assembly → C C → Python/Ruby Manual memory mgmt → GC Bare metal → VMs → Containers → Kubernetes jQuery → React/Next.js PHP+HTML → Web Frameworks like Rails/Django/Express On-prem infra → AWS → Serverless And now, we’re seeing AI builders on top of the app layer. Personally, I started with ChatGPT as “Google++”, then Claude Code → OpenAI Codex → and now I’m again trying Claude Sonnet 4.5. Not sure where this abstraction wave ends. Feels like we’re heading to a point where software writes itself - no humans needed. and this is the future they’re pushing toward ▶ this video
