Everything is Miscellaneous

17K views · 19 years ago · talk · intermediate · evergreen

David Weinberger's Google TechTalk on his book Everything Is Miscellaneous. He criticizes rigid classification schemes such as the Dewey Decimal system and argues that digital information can be organized in many ways at once.

HN people rewatch it as the talk on classification whose ideas still hold up, and cite its take on Melvil Dewey and the limits of taxonomies.

“This is one of those videos I rewatch regularly, because the ideas hold up so well, even today.”

I saw David Weinberger's talk at Google [1] some 15 years ago, where he presented the ideas from his book (and bought the book afterwards). This is one of those videos I rewatch regularly, because the ideas hold up so well, even today. His critique of the Dewey Decimal system was the first thing that came to mind when I read Johnny Decimal. And indeed, it is flawed the same way. [1] ▶ this video

This is so cool! Thanks for sharing. Taxonomies are inherently limited -- I love this portion of the talk "Everything is Miscellaneous" about Melvil Dewey: ▶ this video Surely some things fit equally well in more than one category. Have you considered asking for best two or three categories, and placing the episodes in multiple locations? Or would that be too noisy?
