How Accessible Were 2021's Games?

350K views · 4 years ago · explainer · dated

A Game Maker's Toolkit video reviewing how accessible the games released in 2021 were. It looks at options like subtitles, difficulty settings, colorblind modes and remappable controls, and which studios did them well.

HN recommends it as a good overview of accessibility practice in games, with lessons that carry over to web apps and general UI design.

“Game Maker's Toolkit has some great overviews of how this has played out in the game's industry for folks interested.”

My coworkers and I loved the responses to a previous post and thought I would bring it back every so often for folks who missed it. > Off topic and feel free to ignore but here goes: do you know of any low hanging fruit stuff I can do on web/front-end UIs that will help me get my sites/apps more accessible, that many developers miss? Not sure if many developers miss this: Look at your UI in black/white. Plenty of folks are colour-blind of one kind or another. If your UI works in black/white, it'll probably work for any kind of colour-blindness. See also ▶ this video for something focused on games, but with broader applicability.
