Stefan Sagmeister: The power of time off

487K views · 17 years ago · talk · evergreen

Graphic designer Stefan Sagmeister gives a TED talk on taking time off from work. He describes closing his design studio for a year every seven years and argues the break feeds the creative work that follows.

HN people bring it up whenever sabbaticals, mini-retirements or vacations come up, as the best argument for spreading rest through a career.

“Stefan Sagmeister talks about taking 5 years of your retirement and interspersing them into your working years in this great talk”

Sometimes the long term gain of taking a nice relaxing vacation is easily worth $1000 and a temporary decline in productivity. Or, to put another way, what's the point of making money and getting things done if I never feel able to take a break?
