Distracted? Let's make technology that helps us spend our time well | Tristan Harris | TEDxBrussels

157K views · 11 years ago · talk · evergreen

Tristan Harris's TEDxBrussels talk arguing that technology is designed to capture attention and should instead help people spend their time well. It sets out the argument for design that respects users' attention, the idea that grew into the Time Well Spent project.

HN people recommend it as the place to start for Harris's view on attention-hijacking design in social media and apps like Facebook.

The name Tristan Harris didn't ring a bell at first, but as soon as I heard the slot machine analogy, I immediately recognized his work. I recommend his TEDx talk[0], his essay on the topic[1] and finally, his Time Well Spent[2] project to get a firm grasp about his side of view. (0) link (1) ▶ this video (2) link

With the average American now spending 40 minutes on Facebook per day [0], it may be worth checking out this TedX talk: Distracted? Let's make technology that helps us spend our time well | Tristan Harris [1] (he speaks of a good design example at 4:00 in). It's astounding that this average means that roughly an entire day is wasted each month essentially scrolling through a newsfeed. [0] link [1] ▶ this video
