John Gruber - Auteur Theory of Design - Macworld Pulse

John Gruber of Daring Fireball presents his Auteur Theory of Design at Macworld Pulse. His thesis is that the quality of a piece of work approaches the quality of the person who decides, which he uses to explain Apple's design culture.

HN keeps citing it to explain why Apple's products are coherent, with one decider at the top, and as a frame for design versus design by committee.

“John Gruber had an interesting explanation for this with his Auteur Theory of Design (with Steve at the top)”

Did anyone notice the mention of the “auteur model of innovation,” attributed to “John Kao, a consultant to corporations and governments on innovation” which sounds an awful lot like John Gruber's auteur theory of design: ▶ this video The article even used the same examples as Gruber, hm.

Great article! John Gruber makes a very similar point in his talk "Auteur Theory of Design" [1]. His thesis is that "the quality of any piece of work always approaches that of the decider (i.e the autuer)". Also see link [1] ▶ this video
