Give yourself permission to be creative | Ethan Hawke | TED

3.4M views · 6 years ago · talk · evergreen

Actor Ethan Hawke gives a TED talk about creativity and why people should allow themselves to make things. He talks about the value of art and the fear of being bad at it.

HN returns to it as a reminder that it is fine to flail while making things, and that art tells people they are not alone.

“Felt good to be reminded that if you want to make interesting things, it's ok to flail around.”

> So a story which paints a very real picture of life (rather than constructing a narrative) might just be unpleasant. May be, but to someone going through similar life experiences an honest story might give their internal emotions some validation. Art can do wonders in that "I am not the only one" aspect. Ethan Hawke talks about that aspect of art here ▶ this video One of my favorite videos.

A talk about creating from Ethan Hawke called "Give yourself permission to be creative" ▶ this video But my takeaway was more like "Give yourself permission to be bad" Felt good to be reminded that if you want to make interesting things, it's ok to flail around. It'll feel foolish and that's completely ok, perhaps necessary.
