TiTAN - Overdrive 2 (RGB 50fps) - SEGA Mega Drive - Revision 2017 (1st Place)

305K views · 9 years ago · demo · evergreen

TiTAN's demoscene production Overdrive 2, which took first place at Revision 2017, shown in a capture from real Sega Mega Drive (Genesis) hardware at 50 fps. It pulls off effects and 3D graphics never before seen on that console, in ways emulators struggle to reproduce.

HN people use it as the favorite example of what skilled people can make old hardware do, with effects they find hard to believe.

If you've never seen Overdrive 2 by Titan (a demo scene group), it's unbelievable what the MegaDrive can do stock. ▶ this video I'm reasonably familiar with the hardware, I've written some games from scratch and I still have absolutely no idea how they did most of it.

It's not a game but I'll take any opportunity to plug Overdrive 2 for the Mega Drive: ▶ this video That system has no business producing any kind of 3D graphics but they did it anyway.

It's really amazing how people keep finding ways to make old hardware do new tricks. Overdrive 2 is my favorite example - it's a Sega Megadrive demo that was released 30 years after the Megadrive launched, but still managed to pull off multiple effects that had never been seen on the system before. It abuses the hardware in such unique ways that no emulator can run it properly. link / ▶ this video

In terms of quality, hardware suffers also problems due to increasing complexity. Errata sheets of highend SoCs can be rather intimidating on their own already. And it is this complexity which drags down performance as well. If a smartphone app is nothing else than a glorified web browser showing some heavy javascript riddled abonimation you don't need to wonder why the things are sluggish and memory hogs to boot. Not all apps are like that, but you get the idea. But to lighten the mood a bit: ▶ this video (Titan 2 demo on SEGA Mega Drive / Genesis)
