How Designers Destroyed the World - Mike Monteiro, at USI

64K views · 11 years ago · talk · evergreen

Mike Monteiro of Mule Design argues that designers are responsible for what they put into the world, and that the harms of tech products are design failures. This is the USI recording of a talk he has given at several conferences.

HN's go-to talk on tech ethics and on designers refusing to ship harm, brought up whenever ethics in big tech or software harms come up.

“Mike Monteiro has a fantastic talk on the topic.”

Tech worker unions? As well as designer unions? Basically empowering tech workers to refuse unethical work, collectively, without the threat of losing their jobs and becoming homeless. And, sufficient diversity to ensure representation of vulnerable populations in the workforce. For example, a product team having women in decision making positions is much less likely to ship a product lacking basic protections from types of abuse that only women experience - compared to a product team consisting of tech bros.
