Well There's Your Problem | Episode 46 : Five-over-Ones

291K views · 5 years ago · other · intermediate · evergreen

An episode of the engineering podcast Well There's Your Problem, hosted by engineers who review construction and design failures. This one covers five-over-one buildings, the common US apartment type with wood-framed floors above a ground-level base.

HN recommends it as an enlightening, if rambling and sweary, look at how American apartment buildings are built and why this construction type is a problem.

“This podcast goes over what an absolute disaster this type of construction is”

A podcast, Well There’s Your Problem, run by some engineers and others who rip into them a bit: ▶ this video Some NSFW language I’m sure. Lots of rambling. It’s a journey.

American houses aren't really built from "wood" as in directly from trees - they are build from "engineered wood" like fiberboard and particleboard. That's a lot of industrial processing with a lot of oil-based glues and so on. By weight, the houses are almost more oil than wood. Here's an enlightening chapter of "Well there's your problem" podcast about this with actual civil engineers ▶ this video

Yes, a common construction are these five-over-ones, with a steel-reinforced concrete first floor (for retail) and then wood framed 5-story apartments above. This podcast goes over what an absolute disaster this type of construction is [0], but for apartments in most major US cities west of the Mississippi, it is hard to avoid _some_ sort of wood framing.
