Project North Star: Exploring Augmented Reality

130K views · 8 years ago · demo · intermediate · dated

Leap Motion presents Project North Star, its open-source augmented reality headset reference design, along with design research on interfaces for hand-tracked AR. The video shows prototypes and interaction experiments for 3D interfaces built around hands rather than controllers.

HN points to it as an example of 3D interfaces reimagined from the ground up, and as design research by Keiichi Matsuda at Leap Motion.

Not OP but the team at Leap Motion [1] has some very interesting demos. 3D UI's re-imagined from the ground up. Weirdly, because now everything is 3D, the best you can do is try to mimic actually 3D things perhaps, something that didn't work in 2D at all? [1] ▶ this video [2] link

We're getting really close to the green-on-black head-up display navigational map depicted in Ghost in the Shell (1995) and its spinoffs; see 14m26s in the video, or click here: link > Map UI – Ghost in the Shell link > Even G1 Navigate: Visually-enhanced Direction link Per the video I posted in OP, ER is supposedly using Mapbox as part of their navigation solution on-device in conjunction with a mobile app via Bluetooth. ER is apparently open sourcing some aspects of the apps or interaction model: link And now for something incompletely different, we're nearly at the tech level needed for Keiichi Matsuda's hyper-reality (2016): link link link Related media: Domesti/city: The Dislocated Home in Augmented Space (masters thesis) link Merger (2019) - 360 degree AR concept film link link Keiichi Matsuda also worked on some stuff for Leap Motion: > A series of design research projects completed while serving as Creative Director and VP Design at Leap Motion. ▶ this video link
