This Is a Generic Brand Video, by Dissolve

3M views · 12 years ago · other · dated

A parody from Dissolve that strings together stock footage and the usual narration of a corporate brand video until it says nothing at all. It pokes fun at the clichés of brand films and advertising.

HN people use it as shorthand for empty brand and advertising videos, and compare real ads from Uber, Netflix and the Super Bowl to it.

“Generic Brand Video said it better, faster and was more entertaining.”

> Interesting that they're laying off writers seeing as the American public has been pretty unhappy with Netflix quality I'm not sure if I'm phrasing this right. But I've felt for the past three years Netflix's US' content has become like the Hallmark Channel for U.S. progressivism. Too sterile, too formulaic, too forced. (Or could it be the algorithm that is recommending me the same content over and over?) I'm sure someone could come up with a "Generic Netflix TV Show" video like this one: * Dissolve - This a Generic Millennial ad link * Dissolve - Generic Brand Video ▶ this video I still keep the subscription for some Asian and European content though.

Actually, this reminds me of "This Is a Generic Brand Video, by Dissolve" ▶ this video It even has a wrinkled ethnic old man. In other words, the new video shows that Uber executives lack the self-awareness to understand that they just made their company look like Walmart, Exxon-Mobile or Altria.
