The trailer for Papers, Please, Lucas Pope's game about working as a border inspector in the fictional state of Arstotzka. It shows the document-checking gameplay and the game's bleak bureaucratic setting.

HN people use it as an example of a dystopian game whose oppression comes from monotonous bureaucratic process, and of a one-person game that found its audience.

“I think "Papers, Please" is possibly the best take on a dystopian game.”

A noble effort and looks like a decent game. As-of-yet though, I think "Papers, Please" is possibly the best take on a dystopian game. The oppression in that game isn't just some puzzle mechanic but the whole monotonous process and being a cog in a gigantic bureaucratic machine. Could something similar be made for surveillance? link ▶ this video

Counterexample: link Quite a successful game in my view, developed by one person without some insane marketing or anything the like. Very original and creative, which helped it to find its audience. Trailer: ▶ this video
