Amy Jo Kim's Google TechTalk on applying game mechanics to everyday, functional software. She walks through examples of reputation, collecting and other game techniques used across social apps.

HN people call it a classic on game mechanics and reputation systems, and recommend it for its examples of collecting and reward loops in social apps.

“I highly recommend Amy Jo Kim's video where she shows examples of this across several social apps”

There is a psychological factor to this that is used by games as well. People get addicted to collecting things whether they be tweets, comments, etc. I highly recommend Amy Jo Kim's video where she shows examples of this across several social apps: ▶ this video

There are lots of them. This one is pretty relevant: link Amy Jo Kim is also a classic: ▶ this video Making work into a game: link Note that almost all of these warn against leaderboards.

Mind sharing some of what you think are the important aspects and/or design considerations? I'm really just looking for starting points. We've gone over Amy Jo Kim's video (▶ this video) and while it addresses major aspects of game mechanics, I'm more curious about how we should go about deciding 'x' points for 'y' actions and if there are any known/obvious pitfalls that we might not see...
