Chris Crawford's "The Dragon Speech" (STFR)

14K views · 12 years ago · talk · intermediate · dated

Game designer Chris Crawford's "Dragon Speech", a talk on what interactive games could be. It is often cited for the argument that games can offer the interactivity that makes one-on-one teaching effective.

HN treats it as the origin of the games-for-education argument: worth watching and arguing with, but not worth endorsing outright.

“I don't agree with this argument, but it's a very interesting one.”

This idea certainly isn't new. As far as I can trace it, it dates to the late 90s, with Chris Crawford's Dragon Speech[1]. (Well worth a watch, though this shouldn't be considered an endorsement.) 1. ▶ this video

Chric Crawford's argument[1] is that video games can provide the same sort of interactivity which makes 1-on-1 teaching so effective. I don't agree with this argument, but it's a very interesting one. 1. ▶ this video
