What Makes a Good Detective Game?

1.4M views · 9 years ago · essay · evergreen

Game Maker's Toolkit asks what makes a good detective game and why they are so hard to design. It looks at how games let players gather clues and deduce, rather than just follow the story.

HN people call it an excellent overview of detective game design and of why making a player feel like a detective is difficult.

A detective game that actually makes you feel like a detective. That means gathering clues, using deduction, and making accusations. Game Maker's Toolkit has a really good video on why it's difficult: ▶ this video Return of the Obra Dinn and Her Story are the best I've played so far, each excelling at different things.
